France And Noriega’s Future
September 9 looms larger and the buzz is getting louder as more persons wonder what is going to become of Manuel Noriega. Is he really returning to Panama? I sense some amount of expectancy – persons believe that something is going to happen at the time of his return.
My taxi driver says the only thing that is going to happen is that the present government is going to give him a lot of money and set him up with a new place in the party. Don’t tell anyone I told you that, because that sounds like bochinche to me! Learn what is ‘bochinche’ before you spread it
Noriega’s 40 year sentence was considerably reduced and he is being released next month for good behaviour. He is supposed to return to Panama, after completing his sentence.
However, there is a tussle for him right now. France is seeking the extradition of Noriega from the US to France at the end of his term. The French wish to press charges against him for purchasing 3 apartments there with drug dealing money. Ok then!
According to Noriega’s lawyer however, his client is a ‘prisoner of war’ and according to the Geneva Convention the proper procedure is that he be returned to his homeland at the end of his prison term. Under such terms, France’s extradition plans might not be met.
Well back here many are waiting to see what is going to happen.
I am too…
