MADRE Requests Relief Aid For Peru

International women’s rights organization MADRE is seeking assistance for victims of the massive earthquake that struck Peru on Wednesday night. The death toll at the time of writing has risen to almost 500 with over 1000 injured according to CNN.

MADRE’s partner organization in Peru, LUNDU is already working vigorously in the middle of the crisis. The work of LUNDU is based among the residents of Chincha Alta and Cañete. These towns are nearest the epicenter and are among the worst hit by the earthquake. In these towns LUNDU works with Afro-Peruvian young people, women and families who were already struggling to meet their basic needs even before Wednesday’s earthquake.

CNN reports that this morning [Friday] an aftershock measuring 5.9 shook up Peru again. That is some aftershock! The survivors who are already homeless and sleeping outdoors had to contend with this additional horror.

I add my voice to this and ask you to assist in anyway that you can. Natural disasters strike anywhere and everywhere. No one is immune. These are moments that remind us of our common humanity – we are all vulnerable to disasters of one kind or another. I feel that God allows us to experience these moments to draw us together through our sufferings. We should seek to alleviate one another’s sufferings not inflict more hurt and pain on each other.

Visit MADRE for details as to how you can contribute. Every little bit counts. LUNDU needs to purchse :

* Clothing
* Blankets
* Food
* Clean water and water purification tablets
* Gasoline
* Medicines (broad spectrum antibiotics, anti-fungals, anti-diarrheals)
* Tents for temporary housing

Give generously,
Marvia
