Jamaica Assesses Damage By Hurricane Dean
Jamaicans spent today picking up the pieces after the destructive rampage of Hurricane Dean. The pieces are larger for some than for others. Thankfully, the entire island did not experience the predicted widespread devastation.

A General Parish Overview
Some parishes were harder hit than others were. Kingston & St. Andrew, St. Catherine, St. Thomas, Portland, Manchester and St. James seem to have been the worst hit. Generally, most communities saw several rooftops gone, downed utility poles and trees, blocked roads and a whole lot of debris to clean up. Some places were not that ‘fortunate’. St. Thomas fared very badly with several communities marooned, sunken roadways, and little or no telephone contact in addition to the general things all have suffered.

The status of the homes of the over 5000 persons who were in shelters across the island, is yet to be determined. We do not yet know the full extent of the displacement and losses suffered by individuals and families. Today’s news carried the report of 1 motorist killed. He was driving when his vehicle was lifted off the ground, and slammed into a utility pole. Another elderly man is missing. The houses of 2 families in Mandeville collapsed, trapping them inside.

News From the Jamaica Baptist Community
Word from the Jamaica Baptist community confirmed the general reports of island wide damages. I hope to provide some initial assurance to Baptists worldwide who are seeking information on Baptists in Jamaica during this particular time. Your prayers and your support have been and continue to be greatly appreciated.

While all reports are not yet in, the Phillippo Baptist Church in Spanish Town, St. Catherine and Westgate Hills Baptist; the manses of Old Harbour circuit and Mt. Nebo Circuit have all suffered damages to the roof of these buildings.

A much better assessment should be completed by this weekend when more roads are cleared, and with electricity and telephone contact restored.

How Can You Assist? Partner With Jamaica Baptists
In the meantime, I have been receiving some queries about assistance. I decided to make a general post for those of you who also want to send relief aid and donations to Jamaica. I am aware that sometimes persons would like to help but do not have the information of an organization or agency they could work with that would be accountable for the donations received.

Below is the information of my denominational body whose mission agency offers relief assistance to all Jamaicans in the aftermath of disasters such as Hurricane Dean.

The Jamaica Baptist Union Mission Agency stands ready to receive and distribute any relief assistance you send. To make donations – Please contact :-

hey pastora, bwoy, Dean was an experience to remember. never see such winds in my life. after a week just got back life today. This time around its unique because, election is here and a state of emergency was place ont he island by the Governor General, there pushing elections to the new date September 3. So now Jamaica is in both recovery mode and election mode.

    Pastor D,
Happy to hear from you. Glad you got back life..I mean light :-) What has been the reaction to the State of Emergency? I know the very words causes ripples among members of the opposition. Tell us more.

So after one Hurricane comes another..elections. (sigh)
    Stay safe

Dean was quite an experience in that it was mostly just wind and i guess i was supper blessed because were i was it didn’t seem so bad. I had cramps and ended up sleeping through most of it. It also caused me to have a rather interesting birthday on the 20th…..

Yup Dean did have its way wid Phillippo Baptist Church roof ( can see pics here http://picasaweb.google.com/dberry40/PhillippoBaptistAfterDean ) This hasn’t had the bad results some may anticipate, in fact it has strengthened their fellowship and reliance on God as they seek to rebuild.

Re the state of emergency- sure it would resurrect bad memories for the opposition (and rightly so) but in this case the debates concerning the move by the Prime Minster was more used as a political tool to score election points rather than the need to protect the rights of citizens. To me it was much ado about nothing. Though there is the potential for the abuse of the powers the state of emergency bestows ( as in all cases were one may posses power) Prime Ministers from both parties have called State of Emergencies in the face of, during or after natural disasters.

Oh well, Dean is gone and the rebuilding continues. I got back electricity on Friday… still waiting on water. If i don’t get it soon i may have to be satisfied with bathing in a tea-cup :-D I shudder the thought…..

    Bless

Great to know that you are safe. My parents got back light yesterday (Monday). No water yet. Still they are thankful. When I see the devastation in photos I have received it’s amazing.

Now Derri…a word of caution. Don’t try to stand up in the tea cup ok.

    Praying 4 water for you,
    Marvia

And thanks too for the update on the State of Emergency. I wonder how Pastor D..given his Green leanings has not said anything on that point yet.

The very night the statement was being read, I was listening to Nationwide radio online. There was speculation as to the legitimacy of the call and the same idea of ‘political mileage’ by the Prime Minister was also cited.

Politicizing as opposed to acting for the common good has become such a way of life in the Western world that we have to look under every rock for less than honourable motives in every public act.

The sad thing is, even though you want to believe there is nothing under the rock..there usually is.
