I visited Portobello in 1956 when my husband was stationed at the Rodman Naval Station on the Pacific side of what was then the Canal Zone. We traveled to the port by boat during rainy season. We came to watch the Parade of the Christ out of the church and through the village. Legend had it that when the statue left the church the rain would stop but would start again when the Christ statue re-entered the church. We huddled in the church, then followed behind the parade from the church (2 steps forward, 1 step back); unfortunately, the rain never stopped. But the whole "festival" was incredibly fascinating as was our rain-drenched parade. I was told back then that priests only came over from Panama City for the festival, but none was permanently assigned to the church; and, at least according to the priest to whom I talked, the festival was considered semi-pagan (for lack of a better term) and a product of superstition. Racist? Maybe. In the evening, on the backstreets (the streets were rain-soaked mud in 1956) there was gambling, sale of icons, etc. I have never forgotten this experience and only recently was I able to find anything about this online.
