Lenten Step 4: Be A Secret Samaritan
Today I will do something special for someone in secret. Not even the person will know I am their Secret Samaritan.
I start the first in what will be many exercises that shift the attention from self. I now look to see how I can be of help to others. So I begin today with giving a special treat to someone.
Over the course of the Lenten season I will find other opportunities to give and do secret acts of kindness either to the same person or to others. These will be small but meaningful acts. Great care is to be taken that it never be known that I was the one who did the thing.
We trained the media to fetch and bring us the ‘goodies’ on everyone and everything. The media has returned the favour. We are being conditioned to accept grandstanding for applause as a way of life. We are disappointed when we do not win approval or nobody notices the good things we are doing.
I ask God to lead me away from the path of public performance. Let me serve to the best of my ability when there is no audience. For the audience that truly matters is God.
As a Secret Samaritan, I am cultivating the discipline of secret giving. Jesus commended this to his disciples when he taught them, "….do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be done in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you." [Matthew 6:1-4].
Join us in becoming a Secret Samaritan today and cultivate the discipline of serving without public applause.

I like this. Outside of the joys of giving, it does force one to avoid self centeredness. I say do it and do it well and enjoy doing it.

Yes, this is a call to move away from self-centeredness to true generosity that does not seek approval or cheap popularity.
