Fastest man in the world – Usain Bolt made his appearance on the David Letterman show last night. It was to me a fantastic interview. It was another opportunity for the world to see him as he is; a lighthearted playful just turned 22 year old. Bolt has obvious “star quality” as one of my friends puts it. Yes, he shines off track and on track.
Now whether we like it or not, that’s just him. And if his humour helps him to be at ease so he can do his best, then we should simply let him be. There is no evidence that he is disrespecting anyone. So if he wants to break into Jamaican dancehall moves at the end of the race, that’s his way of communicating to his fan base of young Jamaicans the world over who understands the language of his dance.
In just one move he’s saying ‘To The World’!! And the whole Jamaica who keeps up with the language of the street (hard not to) knows exactly what he means. And then there are ‘young-ish’ Jamaicans like myself whose not-so-young mother is the one who has to explain to me what all the moves mean. So the message Usain Bolt was sending is simple -
Mi naah linga
Mi going tek it dem
Like a Gully Creeper
Tek it – To The World!!
Well you know what? Usain ‘Lightening’ Bolt Did!
Here’s his interview with David Letterman
