First Isthmian Baptist Joins in Panama’s Black Heritage Month Celebrations

Each year, the First Isthmian Baptist congregation in Colon Panama looks forward to sharing in the Panama’s Black Ethnic Month Celebrations observed in May.

This year our church hosted the Black Heritage Gospel Concert on Saturday May 14, 2007. It was a grand affair with patrons turning out wearing majestic African robes. You do not have to ask if I was there. As host pastor I was most pleased to be associated with this event.

There was a joint Gospel Choir drawn from several congregations in Colon, including ours. Felicia Gittens, our Choir Director was instrumental in organizing the evening’s function. The music was great and it was difficult for anyone to sit still in the church. The event was filmed and later broadcast on local television Channels 10 and 13 on different occasions.

The Black Heritage Committee has organized the grand closing events for May 26-30. Colon will once again play host to the closing Ecumenical Service & Parade on May 30, 2007. Oh yes, more Parade. I already told you about the Panamanian penchant for Parading. This is an Ecumenical event and our congregation will of course be participating.

Another thing that I am dying to see is the famous Congo Dancing. My interest in them was sparked long ago from the first time I got a glimpse of them at the Patriotic day parade. They look like Jamaica’s Johnkanoo Dancers but they actually dance like Revivalists or Kumina Dancers from what I’ve heard.

Then there will be Caribbean and Panamanian Food and much more. So stay tuned for the photos and the exciting details coming soon.

More to come,
Marvia
