Panama’s Rogelio Brathwaite Graduates From UTCWI, Jamaica

Shouts of “Panama” and “Viva Panama” were reportedly heard when Rogelio Brathwaite’s name was announced, and as he walked up to receive his Diploma in Ministerial Studies. More shouts erupted when he received the award for Faculty Award for Academic Excellence as well. The latter is the top award issued by the faculty each year to a graduating student who has at the time of graduation 70% A’s in their best 25 courses.

Rogelio himself has created history as the first member of First Isthmian to be trained at UTCWI although not the first Panamanian to attend UTCWI. He follows in the footsteps of at least 3 other Panamanians (need to double check my history here!) one of whom was the Rev. Sam Vernon from Bocas Del Toro, Panama who attended Calabar Theological College around 1950 or 1951. Calabar College was one of the antecedent theological colleges that merged for Ecumenical purposes to form the United Theological College of the West Indies, and opened its doors in 1966.

The graduation ceremony was held at the University Chapel, Mon, Kingston. From what I heard the service lived up to its usual impressive standard. Each year the service is unique, and it is somewhat influenced by the unique personality of a batch. The Class of 2009 is definitely unique.

Say ‘Candlelight’ everyone…

As often we [...]

Therefore, it caught me completely off guard during worship on Sunday July 15, 2007 at First Isthmian Baptist, the congregation I pastor here in Panama. [...]

Murder and Suicide Are Coming To Your Church

Murder – Suicide in One Family
I have never done the funeral of someone who was murdered nor one who committed suicide. Yesterday, a member of our congregation was chopped to death by her schizophrenic son who choked himself to death afterwards.
This elderly member was also very well known in Church and in Colon City. [...]

Each year, the First Isthmian Baptist congregation in Colon Panama looks forward to sharing in the Panama’s Black Ethnic Month Celebrations observed in May.
This year our church hosted the Black Heritage Gospel Concert on Saturday May 14, 2007. It was a grand affair with patrons turning out wearing majestic African robes. You do [...]

A Child’s Good Friday Challenge

A Child’s Good Friday Question
A reflection on Jesus’ crucifixion and death takes on new meaning when seen through the eyes of a child.

I know many pastors can identify with those award winning moments when after a beautiful service (at least in your mind), a child approaches you with a doozy of a question.Today [...]
